ACTION ALERT!! BIG PUSH NEEDED ON FAMILY OPPORTUNITY ACT!!
September 29, 2002
(adapted from an email by Kathy McGinley of the
Arc)
The Senate has an opportunity to take action on the Family Opportunity Act
this week.
We need an unrelenting push from grassroots disability advocates over the next
several days to compel the Senate to support a strong Family Opportunity Act.
The message is simple: "Pass the Family Opportunity Act. Middle class families
of children with severe disabilities have waited long enough."
Every Senator must be contacted! That includes the 75 co-sponsors listed below
and Senators Feingold and Wyden who have indicated they would support the
measure even though they have not co-sponsored it. As with the Work Incentives
Improvement Act of 1999, continued opposition is anticipated from Sen. Gramm
from Texas and Sen. Nickels from Oklahoma. Sen. Conrad (D-ND) is also
extremely important in his role as Chairman of the Senate Budget Committee -
if that committee would release the funds in the budget reserved for FOA from
last year (never spent), things would be easier.
Please take this alert seriously! This is a real opportunity to get FOA passed
this year!
