Request for Papers: Cultural Vitality Conference

We are seeking short papers (30 minutes) for presentation at this forthcoming event to be held on July 10 & 11, 2003, City of Port Phillip.

Abstracts and a short CV should be forwarded by June 6, 2003.

Governments and organisations today are adjusting the way they determine the success of their communities. No longer is the economic bottom line considered the sole indicator. Social, environmental and, increasingly, cultural factors are acknowledged as having equal weight in determining policy and evaluating programs.

The challenges and potential rewards for organisations, from global corporations to local governments, that integrate the cultural dimension as a core policy driver, are enormous. This symposium will investigate cultural vitality as an indicator of community and organisational sustainability and well-being. It will also consider avenues available to those wishing to incorporate cultural considerations within the policy frameworks of their organisations.

Indicative examples of possible topics. These headings are provided to demonstrate the scope of discussion only. Discussion should not be limited to these issues.

How is the cultural vitality of a community defined?
Can the cultural/arts nexus be addressed to create a broader understanding of cultural policy?
What critical factors distinguish cultural outcomes from social outcomes?
Can cultural outcomes be measured?
What policy models exist for cultural vitality as a policy driver?

How does Cultural Studies discourse inform or constrain cultural policy?
In an inclusive community how can problematic subcultures be addressed?
Does cyber culture represent cultural engagement or cultural disengagement?
How does the art of engagement contribute to the building of a civil society?
Can contemporary culture move from passive consumption to active creation?
How does policy support creative industry development?
Authenticity vs Hype: How can cultural policy makers establish creative benchmarks?
How do demographic shifts affect and influence local identity and community engagement?
