Proposition 63 Final Weeks

Message from Darrell Steinberg

Assemblyman Darrell Steinberg

You can feel it in the air.  Positive energy for Prop 63 is spreading, and we're getting closer to making mental health history on November 2.  The Campaign for Mental Health is strong, it continues to raise important funds, and it is reaching voters across the state. Thanks for continuing to support us.

Just a few weeks from now, Californians will vote in a pivotal election with a crowded ballot.  Some of the other initiatives have been higher-profile and more controversial, but our most crucial period is still ahead of us.  We are conducting large mailings, like the drive for early voters, and purchasing important television advertising across the state.  We aim to reach as many voters as possible with the message of this campaign.

Later this week, you'll hear more about the strength of Prop 63 and learn how you can support the final phase of the campaign.  Today, though, we're like to share a cautionary story of another tax-related campaign, similar to ours, that was overtaken and defeated as a result of last-minute opposition funding.   It's important to understand that our stiffest test may come at any time.

Prop 63 is your initiative, and your enthusiasm is the reason we are where we are today.  The more I travel around the state, the more proud I am of this initiative and the people it was created to help.  I look forward to meeting many more of you, and to celebrating victory on November 2.

Have a good week,

Assemblyman Darrell Steinberg

______________________________

Thanks to your hard work and support, Prop 63 is in a strong position to win. With the campaign plan we have in place, we are confident that we can win.

bulletWe are ahead in all polls, public and private.
bulletWe have just purchased $1 million in TV spots, with more to come.
bulletWe have sent 500,000 pieces of Yes on 63 mail to early absentee voters.
bulletWe have an active statewide campaign, getting into the press, hosting events, and raising much-needed money.
bulletAnd much more.

But we have more work to do to ensure victory, which is why we are writing you today.

Rapid Responders

Take the Rapid
Responder pledge!
There is one serious threat to winning Prop 63.  Our opposition could purchase significant TV advertising time in the final days or weeks of the campaign, giving us very little time to respond with additional advertising or a response to their messages.

Frankly, a late TV ad campaign may be the only way they can defeat Prop 63 -- our opponents know this, and we know it, too. The fact that opponents have not yet publicly disclosed having significant campaign cash does not mean they do not have money pledged. Their smartest strategy would be to hide that money as long as possible, and pour it in at the last minute.

To counter this threat, we are launching Prop 63 Rapid Responders, and we are asking you to sign up today.  Rapid Responders pledge to donate online within 24 hours of a significant, threatening TV ad buy by opponents of Prop 63.  That's it - it takes less than one minute to sign up, but this rapid response could make the difference between the success or failure of Prop 63.

Our goal is to sign up 3,000 Rapid Responders by October 15 and to have 5,000 pledged by October 22. Rapid Responders will be the very first to get notice from the Prop 63 campaign when we see threatening activity by our opponents. With these kinds of numbers, we can immediately counter the distortions put out by our opponents, by producing new spots and/or adding considerably to our own advertising purchases.

We are watching what our opponents are doing very closely. There is reason to be concerned about what they might do.  Just yesterday a Sacramento Bee article quoted the president of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association as saying "Proposition 63 is 'special interest legislation." He also vowed that Prop 63 will face "significant opposition" in the final days of the campaign.

As you can imagine, we're concerned about what the final statement might mean.  Sign up as a Rapid Responder today, so that IF our opponents go on TV we are more than ready to meet the challenge.

Gratefully,

Bill Zimmerman, Proposition 63 Campaign Manager
