Christopher Reeve Research Review Act Passes

We have just accomplished an enormous feat and a significant victory for paralysis research. Last night, the Senate unanimously passed the Research Review Act, following the House of Representatives’ unanimous vote last month. In short, this portion of the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Act will soon be signed into law!

Only three percent of all bills introduced in Congress become law. We are about to become part of that three percent. You should be proud of the role you played in the passage of this legislation -- the first in U.S. history that directly addresses spinal cord injury and paralysis research.

This bill is fundamental to our long-term goals: it calls on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to draft a report for Congress on how they have encouraged the use of multidisciplinary research teams (like those outlined in the CRPA) to advance treatments, develop new therapies, and collaborate on clinical trials with respect to spinal cord injury and paralysis research.

So what does this all mean? The data produced in this report is vital to our ongoing work for the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Act (CRPA). We came so close to getting a vote on the CRPA without this data. We are confident that this report will pave the way and make a stronger case for re-introduction and speedy consideration of the CRPA next year.

We are saddened Chris is not here to share the passage of this landmark legislation. But we are committed in his memory to fulfill the initiatives outlined in the CRPA.

The Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation would like to thank everyone for your constant support, phone calls, letter-writing campaigns, and editorials through this process. With your help, we will continue to fulfill Chris’ vision of funding research that will lead to effective treatments and cures for paralysis, advancing promising avenues of rehabilitative research, and supporting quality of life programs.

Thank you,

Michael Manganiello
Sr. VP, Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation
