| Psychiatric Rehabilitation Certification Program NYAPRS Note: The following comes to us courtesy of our national organization, the United States Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association. CPRP News December 13, 2004 About the Certification Program The Psychiatric Rehabilitation Certification Program fosters the growth of a qualified, ethical, and culturally diverse psychiatric rehabilitation workforce through a test based certification program and enforcement of a practitioner code of ethics. The Psychiatric Rehabilitation Certification Program was founded in 2001 and is directed by the Certification Commission. Applicants for the certification program must meet initial eligibility standards, submit an application, and pass a standardized written exam in order to earn the credential Certified Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practitioner (CPRP). Once they have earned the credential, CPRPs commit to abiding by the Practitioner Code of Ethics and continual professional growth through continuing education, in order to maintain their credential. There are a number of states (including PA, GA, IL, ME and VA) that have incorporated the CPRP into their program and/or practitioner standards for providing psychiatric rehabilitation services. Other states are considering using it as part of their standards and organizations are beginning to require the CPRP as a qualification for supervisory positions. The need for certified practitioners in the psychiatric rehabilitation field is clear. It is now only a matter of time until all states, Medicaid, Medicare and other insurance companies acknowledge the need to recognize Certified Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practitioners. Vicki Smith, MSW, CPRP President, Certification Commission for Psychiatric Rehabilitation It is critical for PSR professionals to establish the values, principles and minimum standards for psychiatric rehabilitation services.
