Ruth Puchcinelli

Hi,

I wanted to write your Newsletter editor, but could not seem to see who that was.

As co-founder of NAMI along with Ralph, I would like to share a bit of history with you. We used to meet in each others homes and at Garfield Park Village. My mother, Lee Riese lived there and always got us the lovely activity room to meet in.

Ruth Puchcinelli was one of our early members. We constantly had a money problem for sending the newsletter, which I wrote. Ruth knowing the importance of NAMI, which was called Families and Friends of the Mentally Disabled in those days, donated at a crucial time to allow us to continue to mail the newsletter. We were working on the bulk postage, but had not gotten to that point yet. We were a small group, but growing.

We all recognized how we helped each others cope with the the problems we faced with our disabled children. I still make Ruth's Avocado Pie, which was one of the favorite things she served at her home. We both had a son. Our son lived with us.

I was the first compeer trainee and have been participating ever since. I have also gone on the Mental Health Advisory Board, although I think I am am really too old. Ralph was on it for a long time.

Even though we need a lot more help in Santa Cruz, Housing etc. I see where we have made great strides, and I am so proud that NAMI has survived and grown.

Blessings to all who support and help the Mentally Ill.
