Mental Health Services Act

Peer-to-Peer Program Expansion

History:
Through a Mental Health Services Act funded contract with the State of California, Department of Mental Health, NAMI California has employed a full-time statewide Peer-to-Peer Coordinator to plan and direct a new expanded Statewide Peer-to-Peer program to meet unmet and underserved statewide needs for self-help training for mentally ill consumers. Through this contract, NAMI California will support the expansion/implementation of the Peer-to-Peer Program in nine areas of California through local NAMI California Affiliates.

Where we are now:

NAMI California is calling for applications from NAMI California Affiliates that have the need and the capacity to implement/expand Peer-to-Peer in their area. The nine Affiliates will be chosen based on their self-identified need for and community interest in Peer-to-Peer, diversity amongst identified Mentors or plan to recruit diverse team of Mentors, ability to reach unserved and underserved populations, and capacity to sustain Peer-to-Peer in their area.

PHASE 1: January 2007 – June 2007

For the nine Affiliates to receive this funding, NAMI California will:

·        Provide Peer-to-Peer Mentor Training to a team of four people “living well with mental illness” from each of the nine areas.

·        Cover all costs associated with the Peer-to-Peer Mentor Training, including travel and accommodations for the aforementioned Mentor Trainees.

·        Fund the $500 stipend paid by Affiliates to the Peer-to-Peer Mentors plus a portion of miscellaneous expenses for one Peer-to-Peer course.

·        Work with Affiliate leaders in the processes and procedures necessary to plan, fund, arrange and conduct the Peer-to-Peer courses using the newly trained Mentors in their area.

·        Develop tools to measure outcomes and cultural competency and will assist Affiliate leaders and Mentors in collecting data.

·        Provide ongoing support and technical assistance to Affiliate leaders and Mentors through a listserv, monthly newsletters, and other mechanisms to be determined.

Funded NAMI California Affiliates must agree to and show capacity to:

·        Recruit team of four culturally diverse persons “living well with mental illness” that can commit to attending the 3-day Peer-to-Peer Mentor Training and begin teaching the first Peer-to-Peer course by May 14, 2007.

·        Provide the location for nine weeks of Peer-to-Peer classes plus an additional week to allow for NAMI California representatives to meet with Mentors and participants for dialogue about the course, empowerment opportunities, and celebration.

·        Provide equal match the $225 that NAMI California will provide for course materials and refreshments for the Peer-to-Peer course.
