The Dragoon

by Tom Barresi

As the 20 year old Dragoon looks out over the drift, he is awed by the mighty spectacle of some 8,000 Zulu Warriors, readying themselves for the attack. Not knowing where Roarke's Drift, Mission, South Africa, even was located two weeks ago, he and his 200 British and Swiss comrades, prepare in this year, 1879, to die for Queen, country, and most importantly of all... self!

Our your hero, knowing that his snow-white strap stands for purity of thought, and integrity in the impending embrace of death; he also realizes, (like his Spartan forefathers), that his tunic is the color red, so no enemy will ever see him bleed. With the divine leadership of Lt. Bromhead; it is felt that,by using the aged "British Square" system of "repeat volley firing", coupled with the superior range of the rather lengthy British bayonet; the brave defenders might be able to "make a go of it".

Result: After 24 hours of brutal fighting; the 8,000 Black Zulus, retreated from the battlefield, leaving nearly half of the defenders to live-on to tell the story..

...Zulu Wars 1879 South Africa.

It's about bravery, and I really think that's what it's all about in Mental Health. Yesterday, for example, I coerced a young Schizophrenic into my car, to go for a burrito. He opened the window all the way, and hung out of it for his dear life, but by reciting I'm gon'a make it, I'm gon'a make, over and over again, he had the best lunch of his entire life....

Bravery....ya gotta love it!

And the battle continues...

I shall not go quietly into that dark night

As my car becomes another prize of the repo-man, and I look at the wall where my computer once lived. I prepare for yet another cold shower...in the dark!

Living such fragile lives, with small incomes, and no "connections"; we the mentally ill are vulnerable to hardship, at almost any time. For me, the loss of a valued roommate, sideswiped my life so deeply, (been there 4 times before), that all that it left me was an eviction notice, and a chance, once again to do battle, in the name of discrimination. Having wrapped my torso in leather strips, to absorb more bullets from the enemy, (as did my Filipino heroes of 100 years ago); and surrounding myself with the dying bodies of my loyal Spartans, (who took arrows, so there King Leonidas, would not), and gazing out across the Rio Brazos, with all the contempt a young La. lawyer can have for tyranny, here in Texas; I am ready...

Ready to defy anyone, anywhere, who holds me in less esteem, than any other person in this great country, because I am mentally ill. I'm going to lose. But since homelessness shall be my only reward for such daring, I have already scouted the high grass at the college nearby....and it shall be there, that I make my new home!

Regards,

Tom Barresi
