 Over Drugging Active Children

"Today parents have to be educated consumers, but kids should be off-limits as targets of convenience for the drug industry.”

In an effort to stem the pressure currently being applied on parents and children to put active children on psychostimulant drugs, the Connecticut State Legislature unanimously voted to prohibit such pseudo-medical interference by teachers and school officials.

An Insight Magazine (Washington Times) article provides insight on the epidemic overuse of psychotropic drugs in children.

A Connecticut mother fought for the right NOT to put her first grade son on psychostimulant drugs, described what she called the "ADHD nightmare" when her first-grade son was put on a “behavioral chart” for being too verbal and excitedly calling out answers in class. "When you have to use mind-altering drugs to teach in the classroom, then you’ve gone down a path of no return. I’m looking for education and I want the mental-health industry out of our schools. A parent who feels the need to take a child to a psychiatrist can decide if and when, but it shouldn’t come from the school.”
Connecticut lawmakers agree: " medical diagnoses should not be in the hands of teachers.”

As President Bush makes good on his promise to reform the school system, one of the reforms should be to stem the tide of using addictive psychotropic drugs to modify children's normal behavior.
