Solving The Depression Puzzle

YOU EAT WHAT YOU ARE

From "Solving the Depression Puzzle" by Rita Elkins MH (Woodland Publishing):

Average calcium consumption is the US and Canada is two-thirds the RDA level of 800 mg. Fifty-nine percent of our calories come from nutrient-poor sources (soft drinks, white bread, etc). The average American receives only half the recommended levels of folic acid. Nine out of ten diets contain only marginal amounts of vitamins A, C, B1, B2, B6, chromium, iron, copper, and zinc. Forty-one percent of people in one study reported they ate no fruit and only 25 percent reported eating a fruit that contained vitamin A or C. Only one person in five consumes adequate levels of vitamin B6. As many as 20 percent of people hospitalized for depression are deficient in vitamin B6. Seventy-two percent of adult Americans fall short of the RDA for magnesium. Less than 10 percent in one survey ate a balanced diet. Up to 80 percent of exercising women and many children have iron-deficient blood.

PARADIGMS LOST

Dr James Wright of the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto told Reuters Health that it may no longer be appropriate to call every genetic defect a disease, as not all genetic mutations and abnormalities are associated with health problems. He suggests this definition: "a state that places individuals at increased risk of adverse consequences."

PATIENTS' WRONGS

The NY Times reports that officials in many states are expressing grave doubts about federal legislation on patients' rights, which would override consumer protections adopted by a number of states. Forty states have laws that guarantee patients an independent medical review if they are denied by their health insurance plan, and 10 states give patients the right to sue.

Gov Gray Davis of California told the Times: "Congress should adopt minimum standards and allow states to exceed them. But instead, it's rolling back rights that we accorded to patients in a package of 20 separate bills that I signed in 1999."
