Santa Cruz County Transition Team
by Anna Huskeyl

The transition from Children's Mental Health to Adult Services at Santa Cruz County Mental Health has been extended from 21 to 25 years old. This will mean more clients aged 18 to 25 and hopefully, will result in better services designed for this age group.

The onset of neurological based brain impairment often is in this age group, which has its own set of developmental and social adjustments without the added challenge of a mental impairment. Clients prefer to be with and need the company of their peers. The previous structure didn't allow for this. The county staff brainstormed with transition age clients to see what activities they wanted. The group meets Thursdays at 3:15 P.M. at MHCAN and is open to any clients aged 18-25, receiving county MH services. Contact Rodney Armstrong at 831-454-4544.

MHCAN and County Mental Health in Santa Cruz is one of the 8 participating sites which include Missouri, Maine, Florida, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Illinois, & Connecticut.

The purpose of the study is to determine the effectiveness of consumer-run mental health programs as an adjunct to traditional mental health services.
