People First Language

How many of you have heard of "People First Language"?????

by Diana Kern

I think it is imperative that we all work to become more aware of our language and quit labeling people. I have recently noticed the use of the word "schizophrenic" way too often, and it upsets me. Calling your family member or even yourself a "schizophrenic" is labeling that person and not seeing him as a person first.

So many people have become used to that language that it has become acceptable. But, for me and many others, it is no longer acceptable. I think that words are so incredibly important and I want to share with others what I have learned through being labeled as a "schizophrenic" or "crazy" person. I am so much more than my illness, for I am a person first.

I think that if we keep using the word "schizophrenic," we will continue to stigmatize and label those persons with schizophrenia. But, if we begin to focus on their whole being-their person-then we will see them in the same light as anyone else in the world and as an equal who is granted the same respect as someone without a label.

So, I challenge each and every one of you to pause before you name your child or your brother "schizophrenic."

The Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities has a flyer they pass out to offer more info on People First Language. You can find it on their website: http://www.txddc.state.tx.us/menus/fset_pub_lang.asp
