A Story of Misdiagnosis

by Michelle G.

Hello to all.....So glad that I have found this site. I've spent some time sifting thru the archives to get a feel for what goes on here, and I think its exactly what I have been looking for.

I am here for my daughter, who is 8yrs. old and mentally handicapped since birth. She spent 4yrs. in the psych system, her little body abused with drugs, neglected and misdiagnosed by psychs and pediatric docs alike. This all ended in a crisis situation, a breakdown. She was sedated with Haldol in the ER and transferred to a childrens' psych ward for 3 weeks, where she was labeled with "Intermittent Explosive disorder". Upon her release, we were told that we had to show her who was BOSS, and instructed to create a time-out room where she could be locked behind closed doors, to prevent her from harming herself or others during these "explosions". We were basically accused of bad parenting.

We had always felt that there was a medical reason behind what we were going thru with our child, but could not get anyone to take interest in investigating this. She was under the care of our family MD, a pediatric GI, a pediatric neuropsychiatrist, and a whole staff in the psych ward ... also, a developmental pediatrician. Each of those docs had a piece of the puzzle, but were so wrapped up within their own specialty that they refused to venture further. We could find no one to put the pieces together, so our child suffered, for 4yrs. We were made to believe that our only option for her was drugs......Melleril, Risperdal, Zoloft, Tenex, Depakote, Pamelor..(A single dose of Adderall had her climbing the walls.)

Eventually, we, her parents, investigated on our own to uncover the truth behind her labels and misdiagnosis .... severe constipation, brought on by the drugs and made worse by the drugs, masked by the drugs. Her bowels were only barely functioning, and had been this way for years!

She has been drug-free for a year, and remains well as long as we control the constipation. Its a daily battle, so I wonder if she has been permanently damaged. Without regular control, she can easily slip into a psychotic state, and it could remain this way for the rest of her life.

Lately, I have been considering a lawsuit, more for public awareness than monetary gain. I belong to several lists for parents, where the main topic seems to be what drugs they are trying on their children this week. It sickens me, and I speak out, but they blow me off. They have no idea that they are playing with a time-bomb, they have so completely bought into the psych/pharmacy world. All the little pills to cure life's ills.....bull!!!
