Nobel Prize for Medicine

Three scientists, Arvid Carlsson, Paul Greengard and Eric Kandel shared this year’s Nobel Price for Medicine. The trio focused on how brain cells communicate, and in particular Carlsson’s work shed light on the new antipsychotic drugs used to treat schizophrenia as well as the SSRI’s used to treat depression and OCD.   The Nobel Prize citation stated, “The discoveries of Arvid Carlsson have had great importance for the treatment of depression, which is one of our most common diseases.”
