MINUTES OF THE NAMI SANTA CRUZ BOARD MEETING 6/11/01
In Attendance: Hannah Fairchild, Don Hilbert, Anna Huskey, Judy
Williams, Paul O'Brien, Laurel Wilson, Nancy Karges, Desiree Douville,
Theresa Morales
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
l. Judy: Brief Bios available on the ten candidates for election to
the NAMI National Board next month.
2. Judy: Action must be taken soon in order to secure Web name for the
next two years.
3. Laurel: New Journey of Hope class coming.
4. Health and Human Services budget hearing on 6/21 (4% COLA plus an
additional 4% Continuity of Care proposal by contracted agencies)
5. Health Care Finance Administration has announced the availability of
grants for states and other entities. Potential grants include a
variety of care for the mentally ill. Deadline is July.
MOTIONS CARRIED:
1. Minutes accepted as corrected: (NAMI SANTA CRUZ BOARD…: NAMI SANTA
CRUZ COUNTY BOARD); ACTIONS TO BE TAKEN: 9: ( Man the Booth…: Staff the
booth…)
2. Hannah is asked to represent NAMI interests in accompanying Laurel
to interview Carol Evans regarding use of the Nate Evans Fund to help
finance the Theresa Morales Project.
3. Treasurer's Report approved.
4. NAMI SCC will collaborate with Bonnie Schell to produce a joint
newsletter for July-August.
5. Laurel is authorized to buy Visions for Tomorrow in NAMI SCC's name.
6. NAMI SCC guarantees covering convention fees and plane fare if
necessary for Hannah to attend the NAMI National Convention in July.
REPORTS
1. Newsletter: The next newsletter will be a one-time collaboration
with
MHCAN. Thereafter Hannah will take on the editing and Desiree the
production of the Newsletter. A third person may be involved with "leg
work" or typing.
2. Speakers: Eric Seiley is on for 6/20 at Sutter, at 7:00 p.m. Flyers
have been sent. and phone tree activated.
3. MHRC: Theresa Morales of the Family Partnership Program presented
her
proposal to create a video for the purpose of educating Mental Health
workers with the family perspective, covering Latino and non-Latino
cultures. She requests use of the Nate Evans Fund to cover part of her
budget.
4. CIT: Budget requests from NAMI SCC have yet to be determined.
Laurel
has been discussing structure of training with Eric Seiley, who would
like two members of our Board to be involved. Judy is defining NAMI's
role.
5. Spiritual: Nancy and Hannah are assembling a tool for the use of
congregations to assess their needs regarding mental illness, starting
with those churches associated with Interfaith Compeer.
6. Compeer: Nancy will recognize the contribution of a NAMI member to
Interfaith Compeer at the next NAMI membership meeting.
ACTIONS TO BE TAKEN:
1. Don: E-mail Carol Saffen
2. Hannah, Nancy, Laurel, Don: Distribute Eric Seiley flyers.
3. Hannah: Contact Tom Russell for potential help with Board
activities.
4. Hannah and Anna: Consult on Newsletter editorship transfer.
5. Doug: Take care of Web page name renewal.
6. Judy: Present Web page questions to Doug.
7. Hannah: Write letter to each County Supervisor regarding budget
needs.
8. Judy: Contact Neal Adams regarding prodding NAMI California to take
advantage of new funding from HCFA.
9. Hannah: Investigate the possibility of attending the National
Convention in July.
10. Judy: Mail copies of bios of NAMI National Board candidates to NAMI
SCC Board members.
11. Judy: Introduce Eric Seiley on 6/20
12. All: Attend budget hearings at County Building on 6/21 at 9:00 a.m.
13. All: Write letters to County Supervisors in support of budget
requests.
14. All, especially committee chairpersons: Check Hannah's E-mailed
agenda on Friday preceding regular Board meetings and submit additional
items prior to the meeting.
