| Mental Health Movement The following memo was sent to all California State Senators by Tom Barresi: February 8, 2001 Without question, the 3 greatest statesmen of all time were: Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, and Winston Churchill. It just so happens that all three men suffered from Manic-Depression, (ref. "Mood Swing" by Ronald Fieve 1983). By converting their lonely and oppressive upbringings into self-study, and self-expression, these legends were able to devote their somewhat "manic" lives, into what each considered to be, "the one true pursuit"…mainly, service to mankind. Although I've yet to meet a politician today, who suffers from anything more serious than overwork; your desires are very much in line with our above mentioned heroes…mainly, to serve your public. In helping the mentally ill of California, or of the United States for that matter, it is rather difficult to define exactly how this help should be administered. So, in holding 200,000 potential votes from California in one hand; and over 20 million possible national votes, in the other, we; the mentally ill of America, would like to express our following hope; for the future. Although it will probably take 3-4 years of hard work to secure these votes, all will most likely go to candidates who promise the following platform:
In short, ladies and gentlemen, guarantee us, the mentally ill of America, the same rights and privileges you so fervently grant everyone else. Let us see what it is truly like to be treated equally with other citizens of this country; and to possess certain inalienable rights. And most elusively of all, help us to attain: "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness"; in a country so full of fear, ignorance, and bone-crushing stigma, as seen in America today! "The true measure of a man
is when he helps another; Regards, Note: Opinions expressed in this article are those of the author and are not necessarily endorsed by NAMI Santa Cruz County. |
