Update on AB 1421 &1422

by Randall Hagar,
NAMI Calif. Legislative Chair
randall@sl.net

Wednesday, May 9, 2001

Both of our priority bills yesterday received tremendous support, were both the subject of lengthy hearings with abundant testimony by NAMI members - both consumer and family member alike. We had over 30 NAMI members come and testify for AB 1421. Assemblyman Steinberg, who voted against AB 1800 last year, this year on AB 1421 voted "AYE." Pretty significant, since he is the chair of the Assembly Judiciary Committee and had proposed amendments that Helen Thomson accepted which made 1421 a cleaner, clearer, stronger bill. We owe Darrell Steinberg a debt of gratitude for his assistance. Steinberg and Thomson: what a team!! The amended version should be available late this week

Please send a short note of appreciation to your member if they voted for the bills. If your member abstained, I would like to ask you to contact that office, set up a meeting to discuss your members concerns which prevented him or her from voting for the bill. Once having done that please contact me and give me whatever information you have gleaned from this meeting.

Here are the votes and who voted and didn't:

1424 will be heard on the 23rd, the earliest date for 1421 & 1424, which haven't had a hearing date set yet, would possibly be the 23rd as well.
