Santa Cruz NAMI Supports Grant for Housing

Santa Cruz NAMI has written a letter of support for the proposed SAMHSA Community Action Grant to support creation of a housing center next to the MHCAN community drop-in center on the site of the Grace Methodist Church which burnt in an unfortunate fire a year ago.

9/1/2001

To: Mental Health Client Action Network

From: National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, Santa Cruz County

Subject: SAMHSA Community Action Grant for Service Systems Change

To Whom It May Concern:

On behalf of National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, Santa Cruz County Board (NAMI-SCC) we give our complete support for the SAMHSA Community Action Grant for Service Systems Change submitted to you by the Mental Health Client Action Network (MHCAN). This grant initiates the hope for desperately needed housing in Santa Cruz for the mentally ill. We see this as a positive step forward for ourselves and for our family members. We pledge to support and participate throughout the process beginning to end. The end vision we hope to be a housing complex adjacent to our community drop in center, MHCAN. Please accept our complete support for this endeavor.

Sincerely,

NAMI-SCC Board

Here is another letter of support from a local board member:

To Whom It May Concern:

I am writing this letter on behalf of MHCAN (Mental Health Client Action Network) who is applying for a SMHSA Community Action Grant for Service Systems Change. MHCAN has done exemplary work with the mentally ill as a drop-in center, in counseling and employment.

As a family member of the Local Mental Health Board of Santa Cruz County and a member of the NAMI Board (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill) of Santa Cruz County, I cannot emphasize enough the great need for housing for the mentally ill. My son has been in the local mental health system for the past ten years and I know first hand the great shortage of housing for those on limited income who are mentally ill.

I pledge my support to MHCAN and will always be here to help in anyway I can. I understand that although we have many Section 8 vouchers available we do not have the housing for them. This whole housing situation has gotten so out of hand that the mentally ill are lined up in hospitals, at rehab centers, in half-way houses and out on the street waiting for a place to line. Housing was needed here in our community yesterday!

Sincerely,

Judy Williams
