Resources from Speaker Meetings 2017 and Older

Nov 2017 Speaker Meeting - Jorge Méndez

Jorge Méndez joins us to describe a new ‘Whole Person Care’ (WPC) pilot project authorized and funded under California’s Medi-Cal 2020 waiver.  This grant provides services to individuals who have a mental health OR substance use disorder and at least two of the following: Two or more chronic health conditions, homeless or at risk for homelessness, four or more psychiatric hospitalizations in a 12-month period, two or more medical hospitalizations in a 6-month period, institutional living in the last 12-months (locked care or jail), and/or prescribed five or more medications for chronic health conditions.
Whole Person Care provides services that were not previously funded by the Department of Healthcare Services to help address the high rates of medical and psychiatric hospitalizations experienced by those with multiple diagnoses and compounding risk factors. The additional services provided under this grant include Case Management in the primary care setting, funds for rental security deposits, peer and housing navigation services, the use of telehealth devices to help remotely manage chronic health conditions, comprehensive care management and others. Come learn about the addition of these services.

Nov 16, 2016 - Michael Fitzgerald

(We had some technical difficulties towards the end.  Sorry!)
Learn about the mental health delivery system as it currently is with historical reference to how it became that way. Most importantly, learn how this affects the clients in need of services today.  Everyone must be engaged in designing a system that will be more optimal than the current. The way that the funding streams and decision processes are currently in California does not lend itself to system change, but change can occur if leverage is brought to bear- - achieved through partnership.

Michael Fitzgerald is the chair of the Center for Behavioral Health, of  the California Hospital Association and sits on the Board of Trustees for CHA.  Recently, the Board of Trustees adopted specific focus areas and priorities for mental health care in California. The Hospital Association is determined to provide resources in order to address the critical issues of mental health facing our communities.   Michael is also on the advisory committee for the Leadership Institute Forum on Behavioral Health, made up of many Hospital Systems across the country.  This forum aims to make profound system changes and how mental health delivery is performed.

Nov 16, 2016- Dr. Seetha Subbiah

Talks about the young girl who inspired her book, "Did you Hear That? Help for Children Who Hear Voices".

Did You Hear That? is a beautifully illustrated practical therapeutic storybook for psychologists, psychiatrists and mental health practitioners assisting children who hear voices and see things that others do not hear and see.

It is also an easy to understand and user-friendly guide for concerned parents, children, teachers, pediatricians and allied health professionals.

Intensive Treatment Programs that Encourage Mental Health Recovery- March 16, 2016

Would you like to learn about Santa Cruz County’s service and support programs for those moving out of or into a crisis? Are you wondering what support is available when therapy isn’t enough to overcome mental health roadblocks?
Panelists will discuss their programs, capacities, and plans,
as well as philosophy on how the family can play a part in
recovery. ese programs are for people who are step
ping down from hospitalization, or needing alternatives to
hospitalization or feel they need more support/skills than
individual therapy can provide.

Panelists:

Marty Riggs, LCSW, Acute Services Program Manager

The County’s Adult Mental Health Services Program located at the Emeline complex, provides services of assessment and access to services, care treatment teams, medication management, and therapy. It also oversees all the services provided by the contract providers of Encompass, Inc.

David MacBryde, Program Director, Telos, a program of Encompass, Inc.

Telos is a 10-bed crisis residential program which serves as an alternative to psychiatric hospitalization for individuals in crisis. The program provides a healing environment where residents receive the treatment, support and caring they need to stabilize and move out of their crisis state. Provide process groups, individual counseling, and assistance with independent living skills and connecting to the com- munity. Treatment approaches include Motivational Interviewing and utilizing the Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) materials.

David Campbell, Program Director, El Dorado Center, a program of Encompass, Inc.

El Dorado Center (EDC) is a 16-bed, community-based treatment program for individuals who are in need of an intensive structured residential program. Most residents are stepping down directly from the Behavioral Health Unit or long-term locked care into EDC as an unlocked, more home-like environment, as they continue the healing process in preparation for transitioning back to community living. EDC  provides individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, structured activities, community outings, and assistance with independent living skills and connecting to the community.

Adrian Camp, Manager, Second Story, a program of Encompass, Inc.

Second Story is a six-bed house which serves as short term respite and a voluntary opportunity for individuals seeking to learn how to move out of old roles and patterns and into mental wellness. Staffed by “peers,” the household provides an opportunity to experience what change feels like, and to learn new responses through relationships with each other.
